Activism and community come together on a new charity compilation featuring a laundry list of punk luminaries in Contra-ICE Vol. 1: ICE OUT. Spearheaded by the non-profit organization, Build Art Make Change, the project will be released via SoundsGood Records on October 2nd and features exclusive, unreleased music from over 30 artists spanning generations and subcategories of punk.
Among the lengthy list of contributing artists, Contra-ICE Vol. 1 touts music from Ozomatli, Kathleen Hanna, Ad-Rock, Tom Morello, Fred Armisen, Fishbone, Money Mark, David J (Bauhaus, Love and Rockets), and Jello Biafra just to list a few.
Proceeds from the release of Contra-ICE album will fund grassroots organizatons including National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) and Unión del Barrio working to defend labor rights and provide essential service to communities in the wake of ongoing immigration raids.
The collection of songs was curated by BAMC founder Dali Colorado who spoke to not only the scope of the project, but the ethos at the core of the compilation.
“Contra-ICE is not only an album. It is not only a collective. It is a cultural infrastructure built to support frontline organizations, amplify immigrant voices, and mobilize creatives who believe that love is not passive; it’s organized. Music has always been my first language. Justice has always been my inheritance. Contra-ICE is where those two lineages meet, urgently, unapologetically, and with LOVE OVER FEAR.
As a DJ, I approached this project as a curator, carefully crafting a listening experience that unfolds as a journey. Every track, transition, and voice serves a purpose, inviting listeners to move through moments of grief, anger, resilience, hope, and ultimately, action. My hope is that people don't simply hear this album—they feel it, connect with it, and leave inspired to create change in their own communities.
From beginning to end, it tells a story, weaving together music, comedy, and spoken word from a diverse community of artists responding to the inhumane treatment perpetuated by today's fascist ICE state.”
To launch the effort, punk icons Kathleen Hanna and Ad-Rock of Beastie Boys along with Money Mark, Fredo Ortiz, and Frank Figueroa revealed their take on DJ Snake and Justin Bieber’s smash, “Let Me Love You”.
Kathleen Hanna shared of the single, “It’s not often you get to play music with your favorite people while working with a grassroots organization like Contra-ICE. They are passionately fighting against fascism and white supremacy, which is something none of us can afford to ignore. Mario Caldato Jr. (Beastie Boys) produced our song which was a dream come true for me. Thank you so much to Contra-ICE for making this happen and allowing me to represent what we collectively stand for.”
Art director and celebrated cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz spoke to the call-to-action represented by the compilation release. “Artists, musicians, performers, and decent people from all walks of life are pushing back against the authoritarianism we are feeling in our own country. Contra-ICE is one expression of that. Through art, humor, and creativity, we are using free expression to remind people what is at stake and to show how culture itself can be a form of resistance.”
To celebrate the release of Contra-ICE, BAMC will host an album release show featuring a full day of artists and DJs from the record, October 3rd at La Cita in Los Angeles. Tickets are ste to go on sale August 14 at 10AM local time - HERE
