Celebrated for their competent blend of death, doom and heavy metal, Denver collective Khemmis has announced their self-titled, fifth full length studio effort due June 12th via Nuclear Blast Records. Building on the acclaim of the band's 2021 LP, Deceiver, Khemmis continues to assert their prowess as purveyors of the riff with the new chapter that sources from different styles of extreme music to create a presentation of eight mammoth new tracks.
Guitarist/vocalist Ben Hutcherson offered some insight to the band's headspace in constructing what would become their self-titled release and how the album's stylistic expansion still aims to retain everything fans have come to know and love about Khemmis.
“We decided early in the songwriting process that we wanted to write a tight, high-energy album that retained the essential ‘Khemmis sound’ while also embodying the joy of creating, experiencing, and loving heavy metal. Ours have always been deeply personal songs born from tragedy and sorrow; while the songs on Khemmis are still undeniably dark—I don't think we're capable of writing ‘happy’ music nor can we disentangle our music from our own personal experiences—they are not mined from our suffering.
Hutcherson went onto share how this album is more about the band's collective influences more than anything else, "Instead, this record is a celebration of the music world that has sustained us, both individually and collectively, and has also gifted us with community and a sense of meaning. In many ways, we have reconnected with the energy and excitement from our earliest days as a band, an unabashed desire to play loud, heavy music. That exuberance is infused with a profound sense of gratitude to be able to create art with each other and to share it with the world.”
Paired with the news of the pending full length, Khemmis have revealed the album's lead single,“Invocation of the Dreamer." The mighty offering of metallic mastery showcases superb songwriting that could only come from a real reverence for the music. Along with a new music video from Frank Guerra, the single sets the stage for the soon-to-be-released self-title.
Hutcherson said of the single, “We knew that this song had to be the first single in much the same way we knew it had to be the album opener—it is an undeniable ripper. "Invocation of the Dreamer" kicks the front door in, flips over your coffee table, and sets your living room on fire. It has everything you'd expect from a Khemmis song—big riffs, harmonized guitars, infectious vocal melodies—along with a slew of surprises, including blastbeats and a scorching bass break.”
Ahead of the arrival of the nerw album, Khemmis will join the legendary ACID BATH in May for a special one-off before launching into their own headlining tour in early summer with support from NECROFIER and WRETCHED. Shortly after, Khemmis will again hit the road for a run with MONOLORD. See the list of dates and cities below. Get tickets - HERE
