Dropping her well-received Deadgirl mixtape late 2022, Mimi Barks put the world of heavy music on notice, doubling down on her caustic brand of genre-melding doom trap. The reach of the release ultimately propelled Barks to secure some of her biggest shows to date in 2023, unloading convincing sets at Download Festival, 2000 Trees Festival and Graspop just to name a few.
Riding that skyrocketing trajectory, Barks is now poised to once again cause a shift in the scene. Earlier this year the disruptor confirmed the arrival of her debut full length album, This Is Doom Trap, landing September 26th via Silent Cult. Working with a team of trusted, accomplished producers to materialize her vision, the album includes entries from MorgothmBeatz (Machine Gun Kelly, Travis Barker), Brian Spencer (Slipknot, Scarlxrd) and Kenny Graves (Stitches, HXXXD, and Cody Manson).
Thus far revealing a pair of provoking previews with "FSU" and "BANSHEE", Barks is now brandishing some added firepower on her next single. Enlisting Yeti Bones of HO99O9, the tandem trade high-powered, heavy-hitting bars in what amounts to absolute banger in "MONTANA".While underscoring Barks' trap-leaning sensibilities, the track also features both English and German lyrics - asserting a kind of fluidity that goes beyond added style points.
Speaking to the thematic core of the single, Barks emphasizes the spirit of resilience in her craft and how "MONTANA" is another emphatic example."Defeat is a state of mind and my persistence is everlasting. The pendulum must swing back eventually and it’s all just a lesson. Every tear obeys the law."
Seizing the opportunity to complete the project with Yeti Bones, Mimi Barks managed to connect with her cohort while HO99O9 was abroad for a run of shows. Explaining how the two eventually came together to cut the accompanying music video, Barks revealed, "We linked up for this video shoot in Berlin, while Ho99o9 were on tour with Carpenter Brut and Perturbator.”
As for the direction of the forthcoming debut full length, Barks remains forthright in her artistic intentions. The genre-bender shared of the pending release, “Welcome to a sonic journey through my pain-body and a guide on how to deal with it”.
