Spanning from brutal Brazilian death metal to Southern California shoegaze, this week’s list is tops.

Spanning from brutal Brazilian death metal to Southern California shoegaze, this week’s list is tops.

This week we have a double dose of post-metal melancholy, thrashy death metal from the southern hemisphere, destructive deathcore foretelling the end, and some groovy rock fun to round it all out. For all of our favorite new releases, both singles and albums, be sure to check out the official Knotfest New Flesh playlist.

AN AUTUMN FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN – CLOSURE – POST-METAL

While Closure certainly fits into the post-black metal category, it takes more cues from the raw black metal base than others in this sphere. An Autumn for Crippled Children uses all the hallmarks of atmospheric black metal, with stripped back production and intentionally subdued vocals that paint an image of emotion, but with a brush from farther in the depths.

CRYPTA – SHADES OF SORROW – DEATH METAL

The death metal dealers from Sao Paolo, Brazil have delivered another shredding slab of thrashy death metal. Shades of Sorrow shows the band really striving to be one of the elites of contemporary extreme metal. Riffs for days spices up with new melodies coupled with a solid variety of rhythms and layers, Crypta have leveled up an already winning formula.

DYMNA LOTVA – THE LAND UNDER THE BLACK WINGS: BLOOD – POST-METAL

Intricate, dense and compelling, Dymna Lotva put the “post” in post-metal in that the go beyond the boundaries of even one of the most boundless genres. Harrowing and heartbreaking, this album evoked a physical reaction as much as an emotional one with each layer of pain explored.

HUMANITY’S LAST BREATH – ASHEN – DEATHCORE

Far from simply crushing, these guys get downright oppressive. Ever the oracles of armageddon, Humanity’s Last Breath hold true to their name and their roots, foretelling the death that awaits us all. Unsettling at times, Humanity’s Last Breath knows how to balance haunting and brutal expertly.

SKINDRED – SMILE – NU METAL

Chunky breakdowns and nu-metal melodies abound on what is probably Skindred’s catchiest album to date. Skindred is relentless at what they do, with Benji Webbe’s reggae-style gnarly vocals bringing it all together. Stacked with a mix of hip-hop, dance, reggae, rock and metal, these guys continue to explore the darker side of things.

TEENAGE WRIST – STILL LOVE – ROCK/SHOEGAZE

Wrapping up this week we have the third album from Teenage Wrist. The band steps out of their comfort zone and into uncharted territory, having fully produced this album themselves. This newfound freedom can be heard as the band explores not only the production side of things, but composition, getting heavier at times, while balancing it out with some solid groove.
