Operatic black metal band Folterkammer is gearing up for the release of their second album, Weibermacht, scheduled to drop on April 19, 2024, through Century Media Records. Ahead of the album's release, the band has shared a new music video for their single "Anno Domina", featuring a harpsichord solo from Steve Blanco of Imperial Triumphant.
The upcoming album, Weibermacht, marks a significant milestone for Folterkammer, following their acclaimed 2020 debut, Die Lederpredigt. The band is known for its unique blend of black metal and classical music, creating an avant-garde sound that is both innovative and nostalgic.
The new single "Anno Domina" showcases the band's distinct style, combining the powerful operatic vocals of frontwoman Andromeda Anarchia with the intense rhythms of black metal. The song reflects Folterkammer's theme of challenging traditional power structures and gender roles, playing with the concept of female supremacy in a world dominated by male-centric religious narratives.
The music video for "Anno Domina", directed by the band's drummer Brendan McGowan, juxtaposes baroque aesthetics with a futuristic cyberpunk vision, adding a visual layer to the band's exploration of themes like BDSM and femdom.
Guitarist Zachary Ezrin describes the song as a fusion of harmonic counterpoint and decadent melodies, creating a new interpretation of baroque music with a black metal twist. The band continues to use the symbolism of the whip, both as a musical and thematic element, to express power dynamics and the reversal of traditional roles.
Folterkammer's upcoming U.S. tour, their first, is set to begin on March 22, 2024, in Baltimore, taking them along the East Coast and concluding in their hometown of Brooklyn, NY. The tour promises to bring their unique fusion of genres to a wider audience.
