Bay area standouts Scowl have announced they have signed with Dead Oceans, the progressive label home to the likes of Toro Y Moi, Khruangbin, Phoebe Bridgers, Mitski and many more.
The move marks an important transition for Scowl who have continued to ascend following the acclaim of the band's 2023 full length, Psychic Dance Routine. Paired with the news of the band's new digs, Scowl have delivered their first showing on Dead Oceans with the arrival of the single, "Special".
Again working with venerated producer Will Yip who helped the band unlock a new level of artistry on Psychic Dance Routine, Scowl has reenlisted Yip's expertise for the introduction of their most current era. Combining the band's pop sensibilities along with their loud, boisterous punk backbone, "Special" showcases a convincing collision of pop and hardcore in a way that feels authentic.
Scowl vocalist Kat Moss explained how the single came toegther collaboratively as the band continued to maintain a productive touring pace. "Originally Malachi sent in the demo while we were touring the UK. Cole added his flare on drums, Bailey directed the bridge, and finally Mikey cooked up his leads. 'Special' is a kamikaze."
Moss went onto provide some insight on the message of the single - compelling the fans to grasp the emotion of Scowl's brand. "The lyrics are about threatening the audience by asking “what do you really want?”in clear desperation to answer my own question “What do I really want?” But the answer is simple, I want to feel alive."
