Multi-hyphenate Serj Tankian has completed the rollout of his latest presentation with the release of his newest EP, Foundations. The Gibson Records release marks the latest endeavor from the System of A Down frontman, following the acclaim of his 2022 EP Perplex Cities, as well as a slew of musical projects ranging from his score of the Netflix series Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street as well has his expansive classical opus in the live edition of Invocations.
Paired with the arrival of Tankian's latest EP, the songwriter and storyteller again pens a compelling narrative with the single, "Cartoon Buyer" - the latest single from the Foundations release. With the assist of fellow System of A Down compatriot John Dolmayan, Tankian revisits an era just prior to the 2007 release of his firs solo project, Elect the Dead, breathing new life into a track with a message that remains more relevant than ever.
From the slow build of Tankian's folk-foerward acoustic guitar to the fiery culmination of his urgent cry, Tankian reiterates the kind of oneness that often goes ignored during such divisive times.
“California to Argentina…Saudi Arabia to Tunisia…Armenia to Australia…Israel to Indonesia / They are us and we are them.” Asserting his poignant lyrical ability, Tankian compounds an already powerful track with stanzas that stand for something more substantial.
Speaking to the greater scope of his latest musical iteration, Tankian explains how Foundations serves as a companion of sorts to the recent release of his acclaimed, New York Times Best-selling memoir, Down With the System. Tankian calls Foundations, “A retrospective of songs from different eras of my life, meant to complement the memoir."
Of his prolific creative pace, Tankian explained why it remains such a priority for him to stay active, productive and committed to various avenues of craft. “I’m always moving in different directions. Repetition is boring, and the death of art.”
