Comprised of Jacob Bannon from Converge, Sean Martin of Twitching Tongues and ex-Hatebreed, Mike McKenzie and Greg Weeks of The Red Chord) and Jon Rice (Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats and Tsjuder, the wrecking crew of Umbra VItae has confirmed their full length, studio album return. Set for a June 7th release, Light of Death marks the follow-up to the band's acclaimed 2020 debut, Shadow of Life.
Working closely with collaborators in Converge bandmate and in-demand producer Kurt Ballou along with Zach Weeks at God City Studios, the album saw a final mi from from Brad Boatright of Audiosiege.
Commencing the album's rollout out, Umbra Vitae have shared the pulverizing first single in "Belief Is Obsolete" - a relentless onslaught that offers a tip of the cap stylistically to the timeless influences that continue to resonate with the band. Speaking on the single, guitarist Sean Martin explained, "This song came from a demo I recorded at ye olde home studio although, as with all of the songs on this record, we managed to make it sound even more disgusting in the best possible way! I like Swedish Death Metal and Thrash, can you tell? Big, mean, hairy end riff to carry you out."
Umbra Vitae frontman Jacob Bannon added how the band took their performance cues from Martin on the track and detailed the thematic breadth of the track. "Musically, 'Belief Is Obsolete' is signature Sean Martin Bay Area Thrash worship. The performances from all of us on this one are completely redlined from beginning to end. Lyrically I explore the idea that 'belief' in the traditional sense is obsolete in the modern age we live in. It is abused as a shield and weapon socially, politically, and spiritually, ultimately becoming a burden for all."
In addition to the news of the band's first album in four years, Umbra Vitae are gearing up to perform a handful of shows this June supporting The Hope Conspiracy.
