Unto Others Assert Their Range On "Momma Likes the Door Closed"

Unto Others Assert Their Range On "Momma Likes the Door Closed"

- By Ramon Gonzales

The track finds the Portland unit melding elements of horror punk, hardcore and thrash to concoct one of their most infectious songs to date.

Unto Others continue their streak of impressive showings from their forthcoming full length, Never, Neverland. Thus far previewing the album with the run of effective singles in "Angel of the Night", "Raigeki" and the soaring "Butterfly", Unto Others have doubled down on the range of their latest presentation with a strong show of musical force in "Momma Likes the Door Closed".

While every band looks to push their creative boundaries and expand their repertoire, the most recent offering from Never, Neverland showcases the real range of PDX unit. Roping in a myriad of influences that might become convoluted, Unto Others manage to weave a seamless showing of stylistic versatility that is both unconventional and forward-thinking.

Primary songwriter and Unto Others architect Gabriel Franco explained, "Honestly surprised I wasn’t high when putting this together, cause it’s a weird one. With elements of punk/thrash/hardcore/post punk/goth and metal, 'Momma Likes the Door Closed' is our attempt to recreate an 80s B-movie horror flick in musical format. Brock (Grossi/director) knocked it out of the park with the video, which must be watched with the song for the full experience. Shadows dance across the floor, don’t you ever open up the door!!"

Set for September 20th, Never, Neverland will serve as the eagerly-awaited full length follow-up to Strength and will be released via Century Media Records. The album finds Unto Others entrusting the stewardship of British producer Tom Dalgety (Ghost, The Cult) and emerging from a period of personal distress coming away from the whirlwind two year cycle supporting Strength.

Franco explained how the hard-earned success of Strength, came with a costly price tag. “My goal was to push this thing so hard that more people know us as Unto Others, said Franco. “At the end of it, I was burnt out, full of anxiety and raw nerves."

Franco would find his respite in songwriting, further developing Unto Other's masterful concoction of goth, rock, punk, black and heavy metal. Franco explained how the band's next album marks a turning point in their trajectory, one that embraces collaboration in an effort to discover their full potential.

"'Mana' and 'Strength' can almost be pushed together. I had an iron grip over those albums. Every beat needed to be where I wanted it and how I wanted it to sound. With this one, I took a much looser approach and gave the band members a lot more input. This is the first record with Brandon doing backup vocals instead of myself. Even though I still wrote the core of the songs, this one is a much more collaborative effort. I kind of let go of it because I realized it was killing me. And the record came out better for it.  It’s the best thing we’ve ever done."

Along with the announcement, Unto Others are preparing to embark on a massive North American tour supporting W.A.S.P. for the 40th anniversary of their debut album. A complete list of dates and cities can be found below. Get tickets - HERE
