Celebrated producer and musician Steve Albini Dies at 61

- By Ramon Gonzales

Albini's body of work spans indie, punk, metal and beyond anchored by a series of iconic albums that forever changed the landscape of music.

Music is mourning the tragic loss of accomplished producer, songwriter, engineer and musician, Steve Albini. The prolific craftsman who has worked on thousands of records during his storied career, sadly passed away at just 61 years of age from a heart attack.

As a songwriter and musician in his own right, Albini proved formidable as the frontman for championed collectives Big Black and Shellac. In fact, Albini was in the thick of rolling out his first new full length studio album with Shellac in more than a decade as the band was due to release, To All Trains on May 17th via Touch and Go.

An equally proficient presence behind the board and in the studio, Albini's work as a producer and expert engineer left an indelible mark on contemporary culture - helming classic albums with the likes of Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey, The Jesus Lizard, Jawbreaker, Neurosis, High On Fire, The Breeders, Flogging Molly, MTEZ, Trash Talk, and so many more. Most recently, Albini loaned his expertise to outstanding 2023 efforts including 93696 from Liturgy and the AOTY candidate, The Above from Code Orange.

Hailed for his blue collar work ethic, his DIY punk ethos and his devotion to the art of analog centralized in his hub at Electrical Audio, Albini's contributions will continue on for years to come with a collection of work that spans genre and generations.

RIP.
