Justin Broadrick and bassist Ben Green have announced their return as Godflesh has confirmed their tenth full length LP, Decay. Set for a September 25th release, the Release Records release follows the impact of 2023's Purge and finds Broadrick forging ahead with what is being labeled as the project's penultimate presentation.
The Godflesh architect explained that genesis of the songs, the post-pandemic era of the project and how new label logistics played a factor in the timeline of the release.
“Decay was born from the same sessions as Purge. It was one huge pool of songs. I picked what I felt was appropriate for what I wanted to achieve with Purge, with the intention of releasing the songs that didn't fit as a new album within a year of Purge being released. Unfortunately, two years passed whilst considering external labels, so that I didn't have to self-release Godflesh anymore, but it took an awful lot of time to establish a comfortable home for me. The recordings were done, but as usual for me, I did change a lot of stuff once I came back to it.”
Marking the beginning of the Decay-era of Godflesh, the thudding first single "Living/Ending" is a hulking five-minute slab, defined by harsh, heavy guitars and that signature cold, industrial-leaning percussion.
Weighing in on the magnitude of the project as Godflesh prepares to close out a storied run, Broadrick expressed gratitude for the outlet and his desire to evolve creatively while giving Godflesh a proper send off.
“It expresses my pain, and I’ve put my body and soul into this expression for the majority of my existence. I feel quite lucky, because Godflesh is now physically impossible for me, rendering it useless. I now wish to move out of its constraints, move on creatively with heavy/ugly music to new ground.”
