In what was a well-executed sneak attack, Boston hardcore unit Haywire took on the center of the Universe and won.
Currently campaigning in support of their latest full length and their debut LP on Roadrunner Records with I Don't Wanna Say Goodbye, the band sent out a Bat signal yesterday (October 28th) via social media. The since deleted post shared coordinates and very simple instructions,
"40.75919° N, 73.98509° W, next to the steps. Right here don’t crowd the spot until 8:55pm."
For all of one and half songs, New York's Times Square became hardcore's biggest DIY show, with Haywire presiding over ensuing chaos. Opening with "Flex Your Head," bodies went flying as the pandemonium swelled.
The band would get halfway through their self-titled anthem from Conditioned for Demolition before the NYPD crashed the party. Breaking up the show, the set came to an abrupt halt with officers even confiscating the band's gear to ensure things didn't rev back up.
While the revelry was short-lived, the subsequent footage from the spectacle has made for one of the wildest scenes in heavy music and yet another highlight in the growing reel that has made Haywire one of the most undeniable draws in hardcore.
In the aftermath of the pop-up set, the band have shared a wild fisheye overhead view of the abbreviated set and have shared their sentiment of mission accomplished. “THIS IS A TESTAMENT TO THE YOUTH THAT IF YOU HAVE AN IDEA & A SOLID CREW YOU CAN GET ANYTHING DONE. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE THAT SAY “HOW CAN WE MAKE THIS HAPPEN?” AND DO IT.”
