Resonating as force in both electronic and extreme music circles, James Cody Lollar, the creative force behind synthwave project GOST, has passed away. The Texas-based multi-instrumentalist, producer, became the driving force behind the project that successfully merged synth and extreme metal since first arriving on the scene with the Radio Macabre EP in 2013.
Over the last decade plus, Lollar would become an integral part of the Metal Blade Records catalog, issuing some five full length studio albums, five EP releases and an arsenal of collaboration tracks and remixes - each of which pushed the boundaries of electronic music and metal intensity.
Delivering his acclaimed full length Prophecy in 2024, the effort struck a chord among fans and critics alike, celebrated for both it's ambitious production and its brave experimentation - fusing elements of EBM, industrial, extreme metal and beyond.
The news of Lollar's passing was confirmed via social media with the following announcement.
“The whole GOST team is incredibly saddened to inform you that James Cody Lollar, known as GOST, passed away yesterday. We are sending all our prayers to his family and friends during this time of grief. He will be remembered as a wonderful human being and a tremendously talented artist.
We kindly ask that everyone respect the privacy of his loved ones during these difficult times. He will be deeply missed by all.”
Metal Blade Records also issued a statement on what has been a devastating day of loss. In addition to the loss of Lollar, the label also got word of the passing of Harms Way guitarist Bo Lueders. Metal Blade took to their socials to explain the immeasurable loss and acknowledge the lasting legacy that both musicians have left on heavy music.
