What began as two longtime friends and creative conspirators coming together for a joint EP last year has evolved into its own mutation with Melvins and Napalm Death crystalizing under the banner of Savage Imperial Death March. The first full length album from the joint collective is not a split release, but rather, a true collaboration effort with members of both bands writing, recording and performing a full collection of new works under the name.
Savage Imperial Death March, which takes it's name from a tour that featured both bands initially dating back to 2016, will land April 10th via Ipecac Recordings. The album was recorded at the Melvins’ Los Angeles studio, with Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover of Melvins along with Napalm Death vocalist Barney Greenway, bassist Shane Embury and guitarist John Cooke.
“I have loved the Melvins forever and their outlook on music,” Shane Embury shared. “A chance to make an album of eclectic musical madness with them was truly an honour and a whole lot of fun, which surely is the whole point! Let’s do another one soon.”
“Napalm Death are one of my favorite bands ever,” Osborne added. “It was an absolute pleasure and a dream come true to do this collaboration with them. We wrote songs together. I would write a riff and we would learn it and record it right there. They wrote stuff and we would learn it immediately as well. It was truly a 50/50 partnership.”
"Funny how life turns out sometimes... collecting hard-to-find Melvins 7-inches on Bleecker Street in 1989 and then touring twice and doing an album with them within the following 35 years,” Greenway weighed in.
“Had a great time with it all, and nice to work with fellow travellers in the Melvins who also couldn't care about pandering to 'demographics.' I felt myself almost babbling lyrically during the recording, and that alone made for very fun recording times."
The announcement of the new joint album included the introduction to the project with the first single, "Tossing Coins Into The Fountain Of Fuck,” which just premiered with Jose Mangin on SiriusXM’s Liquid Metal. The track underscores the unmistakable sound of both Melvins and Napalm, with the combined strength of both on the same track.
