Thrash icons Slayer, have announced a pair of headlining UK performances as well as a special engagement in Montreal, QC set for this July. The news lands just days after the band was confirmed as one of the headliners for this year's Louder Than Life Festival in Lousiville, KY this September alongside Avenged Sevenfold, Deftones and Bring Me the Horizon.
Slayer will headline the 35,000-capacity Blackweir Fields in Cardiff, London’s 45,000-capacity Finsbury Park, and the 100,000 capacity Festival d'été de Québec in Canada. The set of special headlining plays surround Slayer's recent confirmation as a featured guest on the "Back to the Beginning" Black Sabbath reunion set for July 5th Villa Park in Birmingham, England. The once-in-a-lifetime, sold out spectacle marks the final Ozzy Osbourne live performance ever and only the third time that Slayer has shared the stage with Black Sabbath. Previously, Slayer was paired with Sabbath for Ozzfest appearances both in 1998 and in 2004.
Speaking to the significance of being a part of Black Sabbath's reunion and Ozzy's final farewell, Slayer frontman Tom Araya offered some personal context,
“I am a Sabbath fan, and doing this show is an honor,” said Araya. "I was hanging out with my brother and his friends during my junior year in high school, and we would play Sabbath all the time, so I am a big fan. Black Sabbath were the originators, people call them ’the godfathers of metal music.’ I think it’s going to be an amazing experience, from the beginning to the end. I’m really, really honored to be a part of this, it’s going to be great.”
Slayer guitarist Kerry King echoed the importance of being such an integral part of the monumental show. “I remember when we played with Black Sabbath at Ozzfest in 2004. It was when Rob Halford came back to Judas Priest and we were third on the bill. You couldn’t give me a better bill, I’ll never forget that. As it stands now, Slayer plays a handful of gigs a year. But that’s how important this Sabbath date is, and it’s great we will get to play a longer set for our fans in Cardiff and London on this visit too. Being on the Sabbath bill means the world to me, because these are my uber-heroes. And to know that their camp thinks enough of us to offer us a spot is flattering and humbling.”
As for Slayer's satellite headlining dates, the band will be supported by a stellar roster featuring sets from viking overlords Amon Amarth , thrash vets Anthrax, along with Mastodon, Hatebreed and Neckbreakker. Mastodon will be the lone band making the trek to Montreal with Slayer. The announcement confirms Slayer's first UK and Canadian appearances in more than six years.
