Soul Glo Breaks New Ground With NPR Tiny Desk Session

Hardcore punk renegades Soul Glo recently made an appearance on the NPR Tiny Desk Performance series and while the appearance was less than conventional given the band's raucous sound - it was actually much more of a first than most people are aware.

Lars Gotrich of NPR framed the significance of the set. "We have hosted rap legends, Broadway musicals, pop stars, world-renowned classical musicians, indie rockers and folkies — there's a universe of music at the Tiny Desk that keeps expanding. But we have never featured a hardcore punk band at the NPR Music office ... until Soul Glo."

Just how wild did the set get, Soul Glo turned the typically politely, performative environment of the Tiny Desk and compelled the intimate crowd to get involved, prompting what can presumably be the only pit in Tiny Desk history.

Taking on fully electric renditions of “Jump! (Or Get Jumped!!!) (by the future)”, “Driponomics”, and “Gold Chain Punk (whogonbeatmyass)” from their universally praised 2022 LP, Diaspora Problems, the band also took on a version of “If I Speak (Shut The Fuck Up)” that broke down the subtleties and let it be known that the band had no intentions of being demure.

The appearance offers a preview of the band's upcoming North American tour in support of Epitaph Records labelmates, Mannequin Pussy, set to begin early next month. Soul Glo will begin the run April 4th and conclude with consecutive nights in their hometown of Philadelphia on May 22nd and 23rd to punctuate the tour. Several of the dates on the tour are already sold out.
