Black metal contemporaries Wolves In the Throne Room have announced their full length return with the news of the October 23rd release of Estuary. The album arrives via Relapse Records and further asserts the band's commitment to detailed craftsmanship and songwriting with an analog approach.
An effective combination of dreariness and beauty, the album's fusion of harsh tones, pulverizing percussion, savage guitars and ominous atmospherics make for a consuming soundtrack that pushes the envelope of modern black metal.
Frontman and sound architect Nathan Weaver explained how thenarrative of the album works in tandem with the compositions. “Our new LP 'Estuary' is set 1000 years in the future after the end of civilization. Survivors of a cataclysm wander the haunted ruins. It is a world of mutant creatures and open portals. Post-apocalyptic religion takes form in a wild landscape.”
Weaver further detailed how the themes of the album are emphasized sonically, bridging the tranquility of nature with the chaos and noise of the man-made world. “If wilderness overcame the cities in the future, the estuaries would be realms of power and magic. Within the album's world-building, the estuaries are key nexus points where magic has taken on physical form. Spirits good and evil walk the earth.”
For the introductory preview of the album, Wolves In the Throne Room have shared “Ghosts Among the Obelisks," a single that underscores the vast universe built into the album. Filled with mythology, ancestral deities and a lost world rediscovered, the visual showcases the ambitiousness of the album.
Along with the news of the pending release, Wolves In the Throne Room have been confirmed for the winter retreat at Colorado's famed Stanley Hotel presented by Fire In the Mountains. The weekender tales place from January 15th through the 17th and is already sold out. .Get info - HERE
