Louisiana sludge legends Acid Bath have been on historic live campaign, taking on a succession of festival and headlining dates - their first in neary three decades. Comprised of three fifths of the band's classic line-up in Dax Riggs, guitarist Sammy Duet and guitarist Mike Sanchez, the collective is rounded out by drummer Zack Simmons and bassist Alex Bergeron.
Given the band's extended period of hibernation, Acid Bath's live return would be impressive enough but the kind of reception the band is enjoying more than a generation removed from their pause is the stuff of pure marvel. What began has a reunion last fall with the intention of taking on select festival dates, has since become a parade of dates, showcasing the longevity of the band's brand of slab-heavy slurry - hulking riffage that only seems to get better with age.
Revisiting the corrosive quality of tracks from 1994's When the Kite String Pops and the 96' swan song of Paegan Terrorism Tactics, the band's live set functioned like a spiraling descent into the nine circles - ranging from eerie to explosive as the band flexed their command on hypnotic cuts like "New Death Sensation," "Scream of the Butterfly" and "The Bones of Baby Dolls".
Countering those hushed moments of heavy music haunt, Acid Bath's most enduring selections like "Tranquilized" and "Paegen Love Song" proved some of the band's biggest moments on the night - a testament to the renewed lifeblood of unit thought long considered too cult to enjoy this kind of reach.
The band also showed true class, taking the time to share their shine with a community grieving the loss of Brent Hinds of Mastodon. With the wounds still very fresh, the band managed to carefully navigate the situation, paying respect to the guitarist and songwriter with a rendition of "Graveflower" that mattered more than ever.
Closing the show with no encore, no theatrics, Acid Bath's finale in competed the band's dominant showing - leaving the capacity audience with a sense of terror and unease indicative of a proper Acid Bath experience.
