Among heavy music's most definitive figures, there remains only only Glenn Danzig. Revered for his pioneering vision, bridging fast, loud, aggressive music with horror iconography, Danzig's legacy and lasting influence on the culture remains ubiquitous.
From his trailblazing early years, vaulting Misfits to become punk's unrivaled renegades, to his arrival as horror punk's blackest of the black in Samhain, to his storied solo run and the completion of his iconic cannon as Danzig - suffice to say he remains one of one.
With a reach that spans genre and generation, Danzig's legacy is undisputed - as evidenced in the army of fans that cover the globe and the legions of artists that reference his catalog as source material. The aesthetic, the aggression, the artistry - Danzig is absolute.
For at least the last generation, rock photographer Maurice Nunez, better known as The Devilman, has been entrusted to chronicle the the legacy of Danzig with his camera. Bottling lighting with a proper angle and quick click, Devilman's archives showcase the magnitude of Danzig and further add to the narrative of rock music's rightfully championed rebel.
Ahead of Danzig's upcoming tour dates set to kick off next month with DOWN, Abbath, and Cro-Mags, the Devilman has compiled a gallery of images revisiting some of his greatest hits. From legendary performances to intimate, behind-the-scenes moments, the collection of photos offers an up-close and personal look at an icon that rarely typically prefers the shadows over the spotlight.
11/04/99: Backstage at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, AZ moments before Glenn Danzig hit the stage with Samhain. Never did I think I'd have the opportunity to shoot Glenn with a Devilock! Danzig was pulling double duty for this run of shows which included Samhain and DANZIG playing.
01/06/01: In studio in Los Angeles on his Les Paul during the 'I Luciferi' sessions. Such an incredible experience to see Glenn Danzig on guitar and working out songs in the studio.
12/29/01: This was one of two Sunset Strip shows. One night they played The Whisky and the next night (pictured here) was at The Roxy. A very rare occasion where the band played songs like "Brand New God," "Devil's Plaything," "Am I Demon," "Heart of The Devil," "Belly of The Beast," and many more that they didn't always play live.
06/28/02: This was the fist time I'd been to Massachusetts. This was taken at the Palladium in Worcester, MA on the 'I Luciferi' tour. I remember meeting many fans at this one that I had corresponded with, but had never met until then.
05/03/03: The night Phil Anselmo joined Glenn Danzig on stage at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, CA. Phil's band, Superjoint Ritual, also played that night as part of the 'Blackest of The Black' Tour 2003.
03/23/04: Danzig on keyboards to what would later be his 2nd classical solo album, 'Black Aria II.'
04/25/04: Deep in thought at the studio in Los Angeles, CA during the 'Circle of Snakes' mixing sessions.
11/29/06: DANZIG at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, CA during 'Blackest of The Black' 2006 fest.
Glenn Danzig & Tommy Victor in the studio during the 'Deth Red Saboath' sessions.
10/31/11: Halloween at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, CA. This was the Samhain set during the Danzig Legacy shows where Glenn brought back the mask he wore back in the 80s. Glenn was known to have worn this mask at the last Misfits show in Detorit as well as some Samhain shows.
12/09/11: Glenn Danzig on stage with Metallica for their 30th anniversary at the Filmore in San Francisco, CA. That night they played The Misfits classics "Die Die My Darling," "Last Caress," and "Green Hell."
10/31/13: Glenn engaging with fans at the Warfield in San Francisco, CA on Halloween night. The Warfield quickly became one of my favorite venues to shoot at.
09/20/14: Samhain '30 Bloody Years' show at the Warfield in San Francisco, CA. You can see the crowd sining along with Glenn "All Murder, All Guts, All Fun!"
09/27/17: DANZIG '25th Annivesary' show at the Warfield in San Francisco, CA. Another surreal experience celebrating 25 years of DANZIG.
08/25/19: Glenn's Danzig movie premiere for 'Verotika' at the Montalban Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. This brought Glenn's Verotik comics to life. After the movie, there was a Q & A with director Glenn Danzig, producer James Cullen, and key cast members from the film.
08/20/21: DANZIG played 'Lucifuge' in its entirety in Las Vegas, NV headlining Psycho Las Vegas Fest 2021. Many of the songs played that night, I hand't heard since the early 90's.
10/10/22: DANZIG played in Sacramento, CA at Aftershock 2022. Prior to the show Randy Blythe of Lamb of God stopped by Glenn's dressing room. Randy is part of the Danzig Family. Always great to see them catch up!
12/29/23: Glenn Danzig at Golden Apple Comics instore signing. This was the Verotik 30 Anniversary event which lasted over 4 hours as Glenn made sure to meet every fan that waited in line.
