Late last year, venerated rock collective The Jesus Lizard delivered their first full length studio album in more than a generation with, Rack. The effort earned universal acclaim, landing on several year-ending Best of lists and cementing the band's legacy as perennial punks and cementing their status as elite songwriters.
Given the earned accolades of the album, The Jesus Lizard's live return has been received with resounding demand. Kicking off a concise stint of domestic dates in the US, transitioning into international performances throughout Europe and even a stop in Tokyo this October, the reunited line-up has reiterated the magnitude of Rack live.
For the band's Los Angeles stop of their spring run, a headlining engagement at the historic Fonda Theatre was the scene for a capacity hellbent on catching greatness in the flesh - of which The Jesus Lizard enthusiastically obliged. Delivering a marathon set that included two encore appearances, the band quickly got to work establishing a powerful precedent with anthems like "Mouth Breather" and "Boilermaker" setting the tone.
Sourcing a healthy amount of new fair, entries from Rack like "Hide & Seek," "Alexis Feels Sick" and "Dunning Kruger" were among the standouts. The band's ability to come back from such a lengthy hibernation and still be so handy with the steel and so in tune with their fans is as impressive as their ability as players and composers. The fact that songs old and new felt so congruent offers testament to that.
Going back to 1989 for their finale, "Blockbuster" from the PURE EP offered a chaotic culmination to the set as the band walked off victorious, vindicated and vicious as ever.
