Norwegian folk collective Wardruna presided over a majestic live spectacle that felt more like real-time ritual. Amid the open-air ambiance of the historic Greek Theatre of Los Angeles, the stage became an otherworldly portal, as the unit shared selections from their celebrated catalog in addition to entries from their most recent triumph, Birna.
Weaving newer offerings in "Hertan," Lyfjaberg" and Birna's title track, Wardruna's ability to craft an immersive, transcendental live experience was on full display throughout the band's time on stage. From the captivating stage production to the band's performative execution, the presentation was one that communicated reverence for the both their craft and the audience that joined the live journey.
From the somber procession of songs like "Grá," the melodic warmth of "Solringen," and the enthralling epic of "Fehu," the substantive and dramatic depth of Wardruna captivated a capacity audience such that spectators needed their feet to touch the ground again before they could rip into applause.
Completing their evening with the ceremonial splendor of "Helvegen," Wardruna could have walked away victorious without a single note more. Indeed saving if not their best, certainly their most effective entry for last, the elegant prose and ethereal pick of the lyre on "Hibjonen" made for an unforgettable punctuation that left the theatre awestruck by what they had just experienced.
