I will admit, I had no idea what to expect when I landed on this week’s Bandcamp Roulette pick, but I was ridiculously excited to find out what kind of band would use an adorable kitty nose as their cover. Newkillaz" out of Switzerland are definitely not what I expected, even taking into account I had no idea what to expect.
Blending rock, punk and metalcore, their debut EP Welcome To Yesterday is an amalgamation of groove with soaring melodic choruses and headbanging rhythms. The title track opener has a plodding, slamming groove interspersed with infectious swinging beats. “Narcissist” takes the vocals to a tortured level in the verse, before switching to a soaring chorus. “Finally Ok” is a solid mid-point, slowing things down a bit at the opening, in an almost ballad-like composition. But the respite is brief as the track picks up and slams you down again. This particular track ebbs and flows between soft and furious.
As the album progresses, things start to take a punkier turn. “Clear View” delves into the 2000s era of more mainstream punk styles, while “Colorize” brings the chantable choruses of older school punk. The closing track “U-R” is electrifying and angry.
This is an album that is made for live shows. It is easy to tell that this band will bring immense energy to the stage that will easily fire up the audience to sing along while breaking shit.
As said above, this is the debut EP from the band, so definitely keep your eyes peeled for more. You can get your copy HERE.
