Symphonic black metal icons Dimmu Borgir have announced the long-awaited follow up to 2018's Eonian, with the confirmation of Grand Serpent Rising due out May 22nd via Nuclear Blast Records. The album finds the band reunited with producer Fredrik Nordström, who was at the helm for some of the band's most definitive releases including Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia and Death Cult Armageddon.
Vocalists Shagrath offered, “I truly feel we’ve outdone ourselves musically on this album. It’s been a long and demanding process, but seeing how it all came together makes it incredibly rewarding. Grand Serpent Rising reflects every era of Dimmu Borgir - This album carries echoes of every chapter of Dimmu Borgir’s legacy - I believe our fans will recognize that, and find something within it that truly resonates.”
Guitarist Silenoz added some insight to the weight of the album title and why it's relevant to the evolution of the band. “Dimmu Borgir is a leviathan of a band on a grand scale and we are rising once again. While the serpent represents evil to some, for us it symbolizes something else: renewal, growth, knowledge, and liberation. Shedding our skin, so to speak. And let’s not forget that February 2026 marks the end of the Year of the Snake, roughly the same moment this album was completed.”
Introducing the album, Dimmu Borgir has unveiled the lead single and new music video for "Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel" - an epic entry of black metal pageantry and pummel. Sung entirely in Norwegian, the track asserts a resounding display of force rooted in the rich history of the region synonymous with extreme music as high art.
Along with the news of Grand Serpent Rising, Dmmu Borgir will join a highly anticipated co-headlining run across Europe this October on the In League with Satan tour. Along with Dark Funeral, the trifecta will prove one of the season's most assaultive, artistically-driven line-ups assembling some of extreme music's most respected names on the same bill.
