Ov Sulfur Debut Clobbering Collab Track with Mental Cruelty

- By Ramon Gonzales

"Hivemind" offers a pummeling preview of the bands' upcoming Beyond the Eternal co-headlining tour.

Emerging blackened deathcore sensation Ov Sulfur have teamed with vocalist Lukas Nicolai of Mental Cruelty for a bruising collaboration track ahead of the North American co-headlining tour featuring both bands.

"Hivemind" marks the first presentation of new music since the release of the 2023 LP, The Burden Ov Faith - an LP bolstered by guest appearances from Ale the Terrible from Slaughter to Prevail, Taylor Barber of Left to Suffer and Howard Jones of Light the Torch and former Killswitch Engage fame.

For the latest show of force, frontman Ricky Hoover trades venomous stanzas with Lukas Nicolai aimed at the herd mentality and blind faith rooted in traditional religious narrative - a skepticism core to the creative DNA of Ov Sulfur.

Guitarist Chase WIlson spoke about the significance of the single, emphasizing the techneical prowess of track and the band's songwriting evolution on full display.

"'Hivemind' is Ov Sulfur's rallying cry against the herd mentality that has turned religion from hopeful to hateful for centuries—to the point where it's basically part of its ethos,” Wilson explains. “The song takes a cue from its celebration of avoiding the typical, stylistically, by taking a left-hand path: embracing off-kilter swing in its dramatic chorus, contrasted with some of their most technical riffing. Lukas Nicolai of Mental Cruelty really elevated the brutality. It's an honor to have our Century Media labelmates and fellow blackened deathcore leaders on a song with us ahead of our co-headlining tour across North America."

Lukas Nicolai also shared his enthusiasm with the final product. "I said it before and I’m going to say it again: joining Mental Cruelty has been an awesome journey so far. Furthermore, having two Century Media heavy hitters join forces on a co-headline tour in North America is the biggest highlight of this journey so far. I am so stoked to go on tour with the guys in Ov Sulfur, Ghost Bath and Extermination Dismemberment.”

Nicolai continued, “And now to have the opportunity to feature on 'Hivemind' is a cherry on top. It was really fun to record this one! I can’t wait to go berserk with Ricky live—though I might try to get up there for 'Stained in Rot'."

The Beyond the Eternal North American tour serves as an important milestone for both bands at the top of the bill. The run is the first co-headlining trek for Ov Sulfur and the first domestic US run for Mental Cruelty. With Ghost Bath and Extermination set to support, the tour is expect to lay waste to clubs across the country.
