Progressive death metal collective Rivers of Nihil have set a May 30th release date for the band's sixth full length studio album. The self-titled release arrives via the band's longtime label, Metal Blade Records and marks the beginning of a new era for the unit, marking the first album to feature founding bassist Adam Biggs shifting to vocalist/bassist and the first full length offering to feature guitarist Andy Thomas.
Entrusting producers Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland, Rivers of Nihil not only turn the page on the next chapter of the career, but managed to press ahead while tapping into the sonic breadth and brutality that first catapulted the band into the conversation in being among the genre's very best.
The announcement arrives following a slow, albeit steady transition from the band. In the summer of 2023, RoN released the consuming track, "The Sub-Orbital Blues," - signaling the shift that saw Biggs now on lead vocals. It was also the first track to feature Thomas on guitar. Last spring, the band debuted the crushing cut, "Criminals" along with a captivating music video. Both tracks will be featured on the new album.
"I feel like these songs are the perfect blend of all our albums, with all the fat cut away," shares guitarist Brody Uttley. "There are more technical songs that call back to The Conscious Seed Of Light and Monarchy sound, but with a more mature understanding of how to pace a song. There's a fair bit of the Where Owls Know My Name and The Work-type experimental stuff, but with a more refreshed perspective on those styles for the current era of the band."
Paired with the announcement of the new record, Rivers of Nihil have shared another offering from the record with the single, "House of Light". A torrent of technicality and total annihilation, the single showcases an auspicious start for the current iteration of the veteran band.
Uttley explained that "House of Light" is a track that, "encapsulates the nature of what it is that we do perfectly while offering a different perspective on the sound with the new lineup. Everything that our fans have come to love about our sound is demonstrated in this song with the new addition of Andy singing and Biggs on main vocals. It has the riffs, it has the big chorus, it has the prog, it has the solos, it has the sax. Just a real classic example of what we do as a band in 2025."
Along with the news of the pending album, Rivers of Nihil are set to begin their Aggressive Progressive EU/UK tour later this month. The run will feature support from Cynic, Beyond Creation and labelmates, Dååth. The domestic leg of the Aggressive Progressive tour will see Rivers of Nihil return to the states for a run with Holy Fawn, Inter Arma, and Glacial Tomb.
