Now marking it's fifth installment, the fall Southern California tradition of Dia De Los Deftones has been cemented as one of the most anticipated events of the year. The sold out celebration embracing a Dia De Los Muertos aesthetic was capped by the kind of showing from Deftones that underscores the band's lofty position as cultural contributors, champions and curators.
Returning to their established home of Petco Park in San Diego, Deftones, rejoined by guitarist Stephen Carpenter, anchored a diverse bill that transcended genre, generation and expectation - as has been the MO since the fest's 2018 inception.
Joining Deftones, IDLES delivered a rousing set that more than emphasized the band's ever-surging stock. Sunny Day Real Estate showcased their lauded 'Diary' album with a performance in full. LA noise punks HEALTH sent a charge through PetCo Park with a set that was both powerful and provocative.
Further emphasizing the range of Dia De Los Deftones, the dual stage presentation cast a wide net with experimental indie slowcore specialists Duster submitting a memorable set. Hip hop outliers Paris Texas left a lasting impression on the Deftones loyalists, as did hardcore outfit GEL and singer/songwriter/producer Qendresa - covering both ends of the stylistic spectrum.
As for Deftones, the band unloaded a comprehensive set that asserted their unique connection with the fans - an intangible especially particular to this festival. Entries like "Lhabia", "Beauty School", "Hexagram" and "Rickets" made the cut for the first time since pre-pandemic days. Deftones flexed their new wave lean with a rendition of Japan's "Ghosts" that proved dazzling.
Showcasing a set that dove into the band's most enduring, even deep cuts, the only modern era selection that made the cut was "Genesis" - a contemporary track that worked well among a collection of classics. That was emphasized when the band would make their way back to the stage to close out the night with the anthem from Adrenaline in "7 Words" that sent PetCo into pure pandemonium.
