Eternal LA: Jane's Addiction Showcase Ageless Alternative During Hometown Set

- By Ramon Gonzales

See the images from the band's sold out set featuring the OG line-up of Perry Farrell, the return of Dave Navarro, along with drummer Stephen Perkins bassist Eric Avery.

It has been 14 long years since the original configuration of Los Angeles-bred alt institution Jane's Addiction has hit the stage together. The unit responsible for, at least in healthy portion of, alternative rock's current framework with entries like 1988's Nothing's Shocking and 1990's Ritual de lo Habitual made a historic appearance for the hometown stop of their eagerly-anticipated live return.

Seemingly rejuvenated by the return of guitarist Dave Navarro, the assembly of bassist Eric Avery, percussive force Stephen Perkins and the inimitable Perry Farrell triumphantly commanded the spotlight for a sold out set inside the Youtube Theater. The weeknight engagement drew a multigenerational audience, one that harkened the decadence and long-lasting influence of LA's storied alternative underground.

Farrell took pause to acknowledge the familiar feeling in the room, referring to the energy from the fans as the "Eternal LA", and on at least a few occasions, referring to the "his generation" and the "old school". And yet while the tone of the evening and the timeline of the songs would suggest a nostalgic trip down memory lane, the reality was much more about how relevant and reenergized Jane's Addiction's 14 song set played out.

Opening with the slow burn of "Kettle Whistle", the setlist included most of the requisite hits, but dared to included the unpredictable in this way. The punch of songs like "Pigs In Zen", the rumble of "Ain't No Right" and the eventual inferno of the latter half of "Ted, Just Admit It..." all landed effectively with the most devout fans in the theater.

While radio staples like the acoustic break of "Jane Says"  and the still electrifying guitar intro of "Stop!" were guaranteed to notch wins in the set, some of the band's strongest examples of enduring force came in form of "Mountain Song" and "Ocean Size". While there is little room to argue just how definitive Farrell is, the rhythmic trifecta of Navarro, Avery and Perkins worked in lockstep and proved as potent and powerful as ever.

From Avery's emphatic low end, to Perkins' percussive backbone to Navarro's seamless swap from rich melody, hefty crunch to lofty lead, it was apparent just why this line-up was what stood the test of time. The band would double down on their enduring relevance by gracefully working in their newest single, "Imminent Redemption". Rather than crowbar in a new track during a lull in the set only to get it out of the way and resume with the hits, the track found a natural fit inside a collection of songs that were decades deep - no small feat for a band this steeped and beloved.

Given the band's recent run of activity, their refreshed return to form and the auspiciousness of a new single plainly called "Imminent Redemption"- Jane's Addiction in LA emphasized a celebration of the band's formative tenure and promising forecast playing out in real time.
