Arguably one of the most definitive albums of the Y2K nu-era boom, Mudvayne's mammoth full length debut L.D. 50 would introduce the band to a global audience and cement their legacy as titans of the genre moving forward. A staggering combination of force and technicality, the effort was produced by Garth Richardson along with the band and included the oversight of names like Steve Richards and one, Shawn "clown" Crahan, adding to the significance of the band's emphatic arrival.
Revisiting the magnitude of that album, Mudvayne presided over a packed house at the Hollywood Palladium for the Los Angeles stop of their L.D. 50 25th anniversary tour. Commemorating the important milestone, the songs steeped in the culture for over a generation rang ever relevant as "Internal Primates Forever," "-1" and "Death Bloom" felt seismic in the closer confines of the famed Hollywood house.
Applying a wise measure of self-editing, Mudvayne skipped the sequential run of the album from start to finish and selectively executed the right songs, for the right moment, controlling the ebb and flow of energy on the night. Opening the evening with the ageless anthem, "Dig" it became apparent that Mudvayne was out for blood even if mode of attack was varied - if not methodical.
Closing their first act with a convincing version of "Nothing to Gein,"Chad Gray emptied his lungs into the microphone as the band closed the book for the night on L.D. 50 in dramatic fashion. Reemerging onstage for their second act, the band's encore was a relentless succession of greatest hits spanning Mudvayne's storied career. Essentials including "Not Falling" and "World So Cold" detonated the room, reminding fans that Mudvayne's depth is substantial beyond the nostalgia of L.D. 50.
The band would also use the time to usher in their current iteration, making the live debut of one of their first new singles in some 16 years with "Sticks and Stones" making the setlist cut. Closing with one of their most enduring cuts, "Happy?" proved the perfect punctuation on a night filled with highlights.
Combined with supporting sets that further bridged legacy with contemporary, showings from evil disco purveyors Static-X and Des Moines disruptors Vended, the LA-stop of the L.D. 50 25th anniversary tour was one for the books. See the gallery of images from Maurice Nunez below.
