Breaking from the band's recent run on the Sessanta tour which featured the trifecta of contemporaries in Primus, A Perfect Circle and Puscifier, Les Claypool and the crew of rock heavy eccentrics ventured out on their own for a summer headlining run in the Onward & Upward Tour. Among the last few stops on the hugely successful trek included a capacity evening under the stars at Los Angeles' iconic Greek Theatre.
Reaching deep into the band's vast catalog spanning decades, Primus played to the knowledgable, cult-like crowd by opening with beloved gems like "Restin' Bones" and "Bob's Party Time Lounge" from the Brown Album of 1998. Shortly thereafter entered one of many special guests on the evening, when comedian Bill Burr sat behind the drum kit to contribute to a rendition of "Too Many Puppies" that also featured Justin Chancellor from TOOL.
The fans, understandably, lost their shit.
Primus pulled out all the stops during their time, including a portion of Oysterhead's "Polka Dot Rose," a take on King Crimson's "Thela Hun Ginjeet" which saw an appearance from Matt Stone of South Park, plus a fitting tribute to the Prince of Darkness and Black Sabbath with a rendition of "Bassically/N.I.B." that rightfully brought the house down.
Rounding third with Primus essentials like "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver," a Danny Carey-assisted play of "My Name Is Mud" and an encore that included an otherworldly performance of "Southbound Pachyderm," the full spectacle of the rock music madcaps proved more than magnificent.
