Punctuating a more than four decade-long run as Brazil's most formidable metal heroes, Sepultura took on a sold out Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles for the final domestic U.S. performance of their illustrious career.

Closing out the United States' leg of the Celebrating Life Through Death tour, the titans of tribal metal unleashed a greatest hits set of some metal's most enduring, influential tracks, running their victory lap with full intensity for a curtain call that brought out a packed house of rock heavyweights and lifelong fans.

Opening with the 1989 classic "Inner Self" from the band's Beneath the Remains era, the track blared as bold and bulldozing as ever. Among thrash metal's most definitive tracks, the opener offered a powerful reminder of the shelf life of Sepultura and timelessness that has defined their catalog.

Asserting the breadth of their work, Sepultura contrasted a classic with their most recent offering in "All Souls Rising," from the recently release, final EP, The Cloud of Unknowing. Covering a span of two generations with the band's first two songs, Sepultura set a powerful precedent on the evening - one that would celebrate the importance of one of heavy music's most iconic bodies of work.

Running with that dynamic for the night, the band would compile the kind of non-linear set that emphasized the pummel and permanence. Essentials like "Attitude" from 1996's Roots, "Dead Embryonic Cells" from the early 90's masterclass of Arise and a powerhouse rendition of the iconic "Slave New World" from Chaos A.D. that guested Evan Seinfeld from Biohazard proved mandatory in celebrating the legacy of Sepultura.

Even the band's most modern entries with cuts like "Means to An End" from 2020's Quadra and their audacious ballad with "Beyond the Dream" from The Cloud of Unknowing, each selection proved effective in telling the comprehensive story of the band as they marked an important final chapter among the most loyal fans.

The live finale also included some added firepower, with the likes of Dave Grohl guesting on percussion for a booming performance of "Kaiowas" become one of the night's most memorable takeaways.

Leading into the final stretch, Sepultura ran a succession of their most vital songs. From "Territory," to "Refuse/Resist," from "Arise" to "Ratamahatta," it was evident the band would leave everything onstage for one last time in the U.S. Saving their most beloved for last, the band would need no encore tonight as "Roots Bloody Roots" proved the perfect farewell for U.S. fans.
