Seminal industrial unit Skinny Puppy has been touring throughout 2023, marking their 40th anniversary with what has been billed as the band's farewell run. The succession of live dates also marks the first time in eight years the band has taken the stage live - making each stop all the more significant
Over the weekend, Skinny Puppy began what looks to be the their live finale with a four-day stretch of shows, settling in at The Belasco Theater in Los Angeles as the closing dates of the second leg of their final tour.
Given their time away from the stage and the gravity of these last live sets, Skinny Puppy soared under the Friday Night Lights, executing a comprehensive set that touched on each era of their storied four-decade career.
Compiling a set that included selections dating back to the 1985 debut of Bites through the band's 2013 return in Weapon, there was no relying on nostalgia as Skinny Puppy proved as provocative and powerful as ever. What was equally impressive was the generational reach of the band - the capacity crowd in the theater brought together goths and vamps of all walks, all ages - to bid farewell to the electro-industrial forefathers.
The more than 20-song performance included some of the band's most vital, essential work with tracks like "Assimilate", "Smothered Hope" and "Worlock" drawing a huge pop from the most die-hard fans. Completing their onstage victory lap, Skinny Puppy closed with a convincing rendition of "Candle" from their pivotal 1996 The Process - an album that appropriately dealt with finality and saying goodbye.
