New Music Throwdown: Playlist Adds 4.02.21

- By Chris Hudson

A massive supergroup forms while Butcher Babies, Hyro the Hero, Tetrarch, Afterlife, Octopus Montage, Bodom After Midnight and more impress in this week's new releases.

A massive supergroup has joined to lead this week's playlist adds. Corey Taylor powers up with Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale, Scott Ian and Dave Lombardo of Slayer for a powerhouse rock anthem not to be missed. "Thunder Force" will act as the title theme track for the upcoming Netflix superhero comedy starring Melissa McCarthy & Octavia Spencer hitting streaming next Friday, April 9th.

Butcher Babies follow up the smash success of "Yorktown" with this week's "Last Dance". The band calls the newest release "one of the most vulnerable songs we've ever written." The track figures to be on the upcoming 4th full-length. Last Saturday, they performed their acclaimed debut album 'Goliath' in its entirety.

Hyro the Hero continues towards completing his innovative new-age mixtape. Atreyu's Brandon Saller steps up to plate for this latest one, "Legendary", following collabs with Disturbed's David Draiman, HELLYEAH's Chad Gray and Ice Nine Kill's Spencer Charnas. "Legendary" is another a gangster rock gem to add to Hyro's increasingly impressive infinity gauntlet.

Hyro the Hero went into full detail, breaking down the upcoming mixtape concept in a first person op-ed for KNOTFEST.com. Read the full account here.

MY NEW PROJECT IS A MIXTAPE CALLED KIDS AGAINST THE MONSTERS. BUT NOW, I’M NO LONGER SAMPLING SONGS. INSTEAD, I ACTUALLY GOT TO WORK WITH LEGENDARY ARTISTS WHO ARE PERFORMING ON MY TRACKS. DAVID DRAIMAN, CHAD GRAY, SPENCER CHARNAS, ATREYU AND MORE… ARTISTS I’VE RESPECTED FOR YEARS. IT FEELS FULL CIRCLE IN SUCH AN EPIC WAY.

"Negative Noise", the brutally hammering latest from Tetrarch, sees the band fully in their own skin. No longer the next "so & so", Tetrarch has transcend the label of emerging and is now one of metal's best. They've uniquely fused so many of their influenced sounds into one imposing massive force. This one fucking hits hard, especially with Diamond Rowe's slaying solo. The album, 'Unstable', drops April 30th and seemingly will feature the hits “I’m Not Right” and “You Never Listen.” Don't miss this track, don't miss this album, don't miss this band.

Bring Me the Horizon's "Parasite Eve" refuses to quit, claiming #1 for another week, while last week's "Amazonia" from Gojira debuts at #2. Architects' "Animals" slides down to #3, while newcomers "Broken Pieces Shine" from Evanescence (following last week's release of 'The Bitter Truth') and Beartooth's "The Past is Dead" (their 2nd song in the Top 50) fill out the Top 5.

Joining Hyro the Hero and Tetrarch on this week's Pulse of the Maggots playlist is a full slate of fierce new tracks from the best emerging artists in the genre.

With their first track since 2020, Afterlife has relit the fire in the genre with their latest "Burn It Down". The raging heater picks right up from the heavy hitting "Wasting Time" in what will hopefully be the first of more to come from them in 21.

The debut album from Octopus Montage finally releases today. 'How to Live and How to Lose' features the Knotfest Premiere track "Voices", the brutal dagger "A Shortcut" and this week's Pulse add "Mother Trucker Dude, That Hurt Like a Buttcheek on a Stick".

“bloodstained eyes” a collab track with SeeYouSpaceCowboy... & If I Die First joins the Pulse playlist, a taste of their combined upcoming split EP “A Sure Disaster” coming May 14th. Vocalist Connie Sgarbossa talked with Knotfest on how the split helped grow the band - "When it came out though because we’d had this idea to put more clean vocals in SpaceCowboy, but their EP made us realize that we had to push hard and make sure it was great to stand up to what they did. They’re all amazing musicians and amazing singers, so we almost had to play catch-up."

VOCALIST CONNIE SGARBOSSA DETAILED THE NEW SPLIT, THE COMING FULL LENGTH ALBUM, AND MORE WITH HER KNOTFEST.COM INTERVIEW.

Becko's "Otaku Pride" sees him take his largest step and land wholly in the metal arena. The anime-core artist previously flashed heavy trap-metal tendencies and while this track still carries that mentality - this melding feels the most polished, all with still enough anime elements to make his signature style shine. An impressive endeavor.

Suicide for A King, Aviana, A Killer's Confession, Bridge Burner, Teeth, Mister Misery and Ultra-Violence join last week's As Everything Unfolds, Vexed, Hacktivist, Ghost Iris' Knotfest Premiere, Siiickbrain, Lotus Eater and more already on the playlist.

New Flesh (Most Recent 100 Tracks) gets intense with releases from Bodom After Midnight, $uicideboy$, Palaye Royale, & The Offspring.

The title track for Bodom After Midnight’s 'Paint the Sky with Blood' EP finally releases and stands as a brilliant testament to the life, legacy, and unmissable talent of the band’s departed architect, Alexi Laiho. Laiho was just 41 years young when he passed away. The band commented on the how the significance of this EP has shifted in the wake of Laiho’s passing. “Like ourselves, Alexi was beyond stoked about these songs and anxious to get these out, so we are happy that we can fulfill his wish. Needless to say, we are honored and proud to be a part of his very last creative work and to unleash it the way he wanted it. It’s time to let the beast out of the cage one more time as a celebration of Alexi’s music, legacy and the man himself.” The full EP drops April 23rd.

$uicideboy$ flash brightest on the latest, "Zuccenberg" with Tommy Cash and Diplo. The track comes 10 hours after an ambiguous teasing message was dropped on the group's twitter. "$UICIDE SEASON BEGINS THIS MONTH. COMING SOON"

Palaye Royale's track from the Paradise City soundtrack hits steaming after the successful launch of the first season on Amazon Prime Video. "Nightmares in Paradise" comes full force, as does the first season. Read the full review here - "The continuation of 'American Satan' made for Amazon Prime Video, the series is a gripping portrayal of the pitfalls of rock n roll excess helmed by a true trailblazer in Ash Avildsen."

"We Never Have Sex Anymore" from The Offspring is a slight deviation from the norm, one bundled in an epic dancing swing, but one that still will please even the casual fan.

All these combined with the previous playlists bake into a savory diverse playlist with major hitters, new acts and everything in between featuring the latest from Apocalyptica, Serj Tankian, Genghis Tron, Mammoth WVH and more.
